Columbus failed to reach India by sailing west because the North American continent got in his way. Perceptions are sometimes so far off that you don't realize what you're really finding and may even mistakenly call it what you're looking for. Columbus called the Native Americans, "Indians," which they really were not. People tried to exploit North America as if it was the India. They tried to find gold and spices. They did not see this new world for the benefits that it could provide them with.
